I need to remove the cones from my 1970 K.
Things I think I know:
1. My car originally had hydrolastic, but had cones and hilos fitted before I got it.
2. Consensus seems to be that BL changed the thread from imperial to metric in the mid 70s.
3. Some corrosion around the top of the thread of the cone

I assumed that the cones being a later fit would have metric thread, but when I used the metric compressor I could not engage at all. The imperial fitted with some effort, but at a slightly smaller 1/2” UNF I am concerned that it is just cleaning up the core of the M14 and May let go when I have my fingers in the way.

Anyone have any experience here - is it possible to get the 1/2” tool into the M14 cone?

The 1/2” UNF will be ~12.7mm diameter so it will go into the M14. Not properly, but it will until you have enough tension that it will then pull out.
If you can get the trumpet off you can see the thread and with internal calipers, measure the inside diameter of the thread.
Without looking up a thread chart, an M14 is about 12mm ID, and a 1/2” about 10.5mm.
