Me again!

I am replacing diff covers, speedo drive covers etc on the gearbox after changing the final drive. I noticed that the engine builder has used an orange silicon type sealant on the gaskets.

I will of course be replacing with new actual gaskets, but would you recommend I use something similar to the orange silicon stuff or use the Permatex Aviation Sealant Liquid like I used on the water pump?
If I should use silicon, do you have a recommendation?

Thanks guys!

I try and avoid silicone sealants because if overdone the excess can block strainers/ filters and small galleries. A little bit is ok. Just make sure it doesn't squeeze out when the mating surfaces are tightened up.

I've left behind most of the traditional sealants, and use products like Permatex Ultra Grey (Used to be also called GM Grey) https://www.permatex.com/products/gaske ... t-maker-2/

This stuff is used for modern engine construction which doesn't use gaskets anymore, so this silicone coupled with the mini's paper gaskets (because not every machined surface aligns perfectly on a 60-year-old car) gives the best of modern tech to sealing engines. My engines are ten years old with a lot of good road use and the joints are still excellent.

I use Permatex ultra black silicone sealant on timing cover because it's never flat.
Everywhere else I use either Loctite 515 or Permatex anaerobic gasket maker.
I currently have NO diff side cover gaskets to save using a pile of shims (current sold gaskets far thicker than originals).
No leaks there in 20 years.
