Gday. What's the latest with Starter Motors? I've had it with the original type and want to change to the pre-engaged Gemini type.

After some searching on here I ordered one from MG Spare Parts (Heritage MG) but got a message back that they are out of stock.

Am I best to get an original Gemini one to modify from a wrecker, or are the new ones better? I see Minisport stock one but quite pricey at $450. I guess anything original from a Gemini is quite old now for an electric motor..

You can get new Gemini starters on eBay for around $170 last time I looked.
To make them fit takes 10mins to file the mounting flange holes.
You will need to either keep the old Lucas solenoid to drive the Gemini one, or ose a 40A relay. Otherwise your ignition switch will get to handle 35A. Not designed for this.

Many thanks. I'll track down a new Gemini one. The mods and electrical shouldn't be a problem, thanks for the tips. Cheers.

Won't fit with an S oil cooler.
(Edit) unless you move it towards radiator.

Thanks for the replies. A Gemini one from Ebay is on it's way to me as we speak. Cheers!

Have a Gemini one on my a+ but they don't crank as hard as the originals. Called Holden in the 90's and checked the cranking torque, turns out it's a little less then the Lucas original.

And they draw a lot more current, 350A according to the data sheet.
But benefits are the pinion doesn't throw out if motor gives isolated kicks, also it doesn't munch the ring gear teeth up.

I use the ones from Tony, Convertible Mini.
Do a good job, and fit with the standard S oil cooler.

I have one of these too. It does the business no issues and has done for years.

I just cut the protruding nose off the flywheel "wok" so the pinion/bendix hangs in fresh air. Easy to get to, clean and keep lubricated with graphite. Never had a problem since.

I still make the Bosch Planetary geared Starters for Minis.Sold quite a few over the years. Most Australian Mini racers have one of mine fitted too. They are guaranteed to start any mini engine regardless of compression ratio or bore size. yes and they even fit on a cooper S with oil cooler in front. My own design modification that I am proud of.
