Are there different manufactures of these. The last ones I purchased were crap. Thin stainless, only 3 mounting studs, flimsy and a poor fit around the boot hinges. They look the part but not good for a quality restoration.
Are chrome ones available?

Good question, I have 3 bars 2 chrome and one stainless., i have had them all for over 20 years. The stainless one is definately lighter and less substantial than the chromed ones. All need major work to make them usable. I understand the Cooper S originally came with stainless. Mine came with chrome but the car had been accident damaged at both ends so probably had them replaced in the past.

Yes the government will add on almost $300 to your overseas order if it is greater than $1000. It's not just 10% GST. It's also customs duty and import declaration charges. They simply hold it or return it if you don't pay the full amount. Buy local and help keep them in business but sometimes there are massive differences, even including overseas shipping on some items. The bottom line must still be what sort of quality are you getting?

Luckily it's less than $1000

I notice that Mini Spares UK list a range of European countries and their respective VAT/GST tax rates that Mini Spares will impose and collect on behalf of the country where the customer lives.
So they are able to do the same to Aust customers when/if the Aust government legislates to charge our GST on these goods.

The statement I made that you are responding to stands, except maybe I should have said UK VAT exempt.
I am not at all sure about the ability of the Aust Govt to require MS to collect GST. The VAT etc charged on shipments to EU member states is machinated by the EU. A separate mechanism to handle GST on behalf of Australia will have to be negotiated direct with the the suppliers that are of interest.

I understood that you meant that Aust customers were VAT exempt when purchasing from UK. I take your point that MS is collecting taxes on behalf of other EU countries because of EU regulations.
I just wanted to point out that MS had the capacity to collect different rates of sales tax already.
Whether that ever happens does depend on Aust Government - as DrMini says, it was meant to be introduced on July 1st but delayed because of the scale of the process.
