previous owner states fuel gauge worked fine - although he said he may have forgotten to re install a wire. (I can only see two on the side that go into the actual sender. are there any others?)

also, when the PO had it he only had the LHS tank hooked up. I'm now running twin tanks. (was already there just needed to be hooked up)

I shined a light into the tank last night and the float seemed to be ok. I didnt have a stick long enough to try moving it to see if it would affect the reading. but I've ran the car enough for it to be at about half tank. and it still reading full. over full really. starts at empty until you turn the key then it just goes full and stays there.

What should I be checking? should I just remove the wires and re install? if they are the wrong way around would it read full or would it read the opposite of what its supposed to?

There are a couple of different types of senders and gauges depending on if the car has a voltage regulator.

Early cars = fuel sender with screws and no regulator
1964 cars = fuel sender twist on and no regulator
Post 1964 = fuel sender twist on and regulator

its got deluxe tags so I'm gonna guess its 65 onwards.

i havent sussed it out completely but I cant see any scrtews holding it in (from memory) only two wires going out. one grounded to the rear seat back base.

that said, I did recently convert to an alternator and the voltage reg had been taken out. Would that play havoc?

I think if it's 65 it should have a voltage regulator/stabiliser on the back of the speedo giving 10V to the fuel gauge?

Might sound too simple but on tank one wire is earth other is gauge, they're not on back to front?
If you unplug sender, does gauge go down?

I once had a car with the gauge stuck on full. I didn't bother fixing it, I just drove it for 5 years and never put fuel in it. It was still full when I sold it. ;-)
