I have just collected a 1969-70 Morris Mini Matic

I need some Vin details, the Engine is a 1000 99H119/H1677 the radiator cowl number is 849 no other numbers or letters
the number in the bonnet hinge gutter is 359

Looks no Vin plate was ever fitted , also has a alt not a generator this a YMA2S4 or a 2MAS4 ???

Eng no tag is still attached with a bit of lock wire, the same number is stamped into the engine block.

Christal white with blue trim, This matic may be for sale

Old black & white plate is Victorian KJE-727.

I will have another good look at the body for extra numbers etc.

Might be a YA2S5 MK2.

Should have YA2S5 849 on the radiator shroud and no ID plate fitted.

Are there any other numbers next to the 359 in the gutter?

2/05A was used for the MK2 Matic, 2/05 is a Min K. 2/06 MK2 Cooper S.

A 1970 Matic should be YA2S5 prefix. Same as mine, which is #1385, March 1970.
It should have a square compliance plate on the driver's side suspension tower if it's a 1970. If not, it's probably a 1969.

It sounds like a 1969 to me. They didn't sell that fast that your number could be January 1970 and mine in March.

Just bad timing. I wish I'd seen this a week ago. Magazine off to printers this week, with a feature on the Mini-Matic.

It appears some Mk2 Mini-Matics were numbered YG2S5, even though they still had the 998cc engine and should have been YA2S5.

Our feature car in the magazine and one other that I have a photo of the rad shroud, are YG2S5. We also have, courtesy of John Sneddon, a photo of a compliance plate from March or April 1970 (it has a 3 overstamped with a 4) which shows YG2S5 but the G has been overstamped with an A.

It seems somebody made a mistake stamping YG2S5 into a number of cars but we don't know if these were in any sort of batch or if they were all that way until a particular date when the mistake was discovered, or if they were completely random.

Mini K was YG2S1 and Mini 1100 was YG2S3, while Mk2 Cooper S was YG2S4, so it is easy to see how someone made the mistake, being the Mk2 Mini-Martic, but because it was 998cc it of course should have been YA2S5.

Mk1 Mini-Matic was YMA2S4 - the M for Morris, or K for Cooper S, was deleted with all Mk2 Minis.

I hope this helps.

Watto.

Watto. Do you know what build code they used?

Don't worry I found the answer - They used 2/05 A

Hi Watto,
My car has YA2S5 on the radiator shroud, and YG2S5 on the compliance plate.
However as the plate prefix is half obscured by the Matic heater it never gave me problems during annual inspection (apart from an initial argument for blue slip). The numbers on end are more visible.
