tried to check to see if I had a running engine in a rusty mini I purchased a while back. Its wires to the back of the ignition had been cut and hooked up to another key switch which I didnt have the key for. I can not for the life of me get spark, is has new points, condensor, have tried some spare coils I have. I have just been connecting two wires from the back of the switch together and it turns over fine but no spark. Any suggestions on the cheap as I just want to see if it is a runner or not.

Just run a 12v wire from the starter solenoid to the coil

Which terminal, same one as white and red wire? I did so and nothing still

Always check if your coil is wired up correctly first with Ignition feed connected to the Coil terminal marked +. And the wire coming from the Distributor points connected to the terminal marked -. If you just want to try and see if the engine will start you can disconnect all existing wires from Coil and just run some temporary wires You will need the distributor wire to Coil Negative and a battery + feed to Coil + terminal. You will not need any ignition switch or key to crank just bridge the Solenoid trigger spade terminal to the battery cable post with a screw driver or a small piece of wire. MAKE SURE YOU DON"T SPILL ANY FUEL PRIOR TO TRYING THIS.

Just hotwire it - from where the cable from the battery bolts onto the solenoid simply connect another wire to the same terminal and run it direct to the +ve post on the coil.

If/when it starts, turning the ignition off won't stop it.
You will have to pull the wire off the coil
