Well, OK, I thought I had the answer, but there is obviously still some debate.
I am hoping to talk with another person who may know something about it - but remeber, it is very much dependant on the memories of people for something that happened 40+ years ago.
I will let you all know when I speak with this other chap (on my way hiome from Brisbane in September).
Cheers,
Watto.

Watto. Did you get a definitive answer?

I reckon that they sold complete shells for written off cars and these were stamped PA 001 2/06 and PA 002 2/06 and so on for the Mk2 S. A Mk1S would have PA 001 M2/06 number on the radiator shroud.
The position of the stamping on the car above matches the position on a MK2 S from Apr 1970 onwards. If these were early production test shells the 2/06 would have been in the gutter not on the firewall.
This car is also missing any radiator shroud chassis number stamps which gives weight to the replacement blank shell theory.
