And make sure the new one has a seal spreader. Most don't. So the seals don't last long before they suck air.
Fit the old one

Ah yes I did read that somewhere about the spreader thanks for the reminder.

Thoughts on taking out the old one, checking the bore and grabbing a repair kit if it looks ok?

Assume it's not too hard to remove and refit? Remove plunger one end, fastening bolt in middle and hose other end?

Easy to remove and refit. Just as you said.
If bore is not too pitted just use some 180 wet & dry paper to smooth it then fit a seal kit.
I have NEVER bought a new slave cylinder (for my cars) - I just rekit them. :)

Ageing slave cylinder hoses cause this problem too....and they look just fine.
The hydraulic pressure goes into expanding the inner wall of the hose instead of imparting force on the slave piston. Cheap and easy to replace if you have the slave already off.

In the past , i bought one of the new aftermarket slave cylinders to get me out of trouble , i swapped them over and got the car running , i then sent the original one to a brake specialist and had it recoed and a stainless steel sleeve fitted , swapped them back over and haven't had a problem for years .

It doesn't come cheap to get them s/s sleeved , but worth it in my opinion .

Ah not a bad idea.
I've picked up a repair kit for $22 delivered and see it as a good opportunity to try my hand at some engine bay work.

I'll have to check the hose too. From memory it looked fine and seems a definite leak at the slave seal
