Dr Mini,I realise it was some time ago,but do you recall if you had put the pump in first and checked the rotation or were the pistons installed first? I usually do it the later then turn it over by a screwdriver in the crank.

I always put the pump in & check it turns OK before I fit the chain & sprockets. However, I make sure the cam sprocket slides nice on the key, I never hit it onto the cam with a bfh.

The only oil pump problem I have noticed recently is some new 1275A+ slot drive pumps don't have enough chamfer on the corner near the gasket. I had 2 instances where I had to make the chamfer bigger, the pump would not sit right on the gasket. So, it didn't prime.

I installed one of those Cooper S pumps with the longer shaft pressed in, into a motor about two and a half years ago. I checked the length of the shaft before installation and it was correct, the car's now done several thousand miles and there's no problem. I take my hat off to the retailer for making the previously unavailable part available, just a shame a batch have been found defective - quality control should have picked it up.

Yep, tried the oil pump installation in my current rebuild and "YES", it was found to be 3mm too long. I then had to cut 3mm off the pump shaft and grind the groove to accept the pin drive on the cam, roughly 3mm. Beware of these pumps and many thanks for this post. Failure to notice this , could have resulted in possible engine failure.
