Post subject:  What needles twin HS4 1330 276 1.5 rockers extensive porting

Hi,

I know this has probably been asked a million times but I've only seen one post that has a similar setup and I want to know if this sounds about right.

As stated 1330 with 276 Kent cam, 1.5 rockers, extractors, extensive porting etc.

Currently I'm on about 24 flats which seems excessive but anything below 22 and it struggles to run. It does over run on shut down when it's hot or been running for a while especially in warm weather. Anything more than 24 flats and its rich so I'm picking the needles for a start are wrong.

I did read someone saying a number 3 or 4 needles with red springs. If that's a good starting point what sort of flats would I be looking at as a starting point.

Currently I have AAM needles with red springs and the HS4's were bought brand new a couple of years ago.

Try AH2 needles.

The jets should be 1 to 2mm below the bridge of the carb. My engine is 1360 big ports, re13 cam twin hs4 red springs, dizzy correctly set up for the cam and AAm needles as well. Goes well.

You could be running it way to rich.

hmmmm interesting... Swift set them up brand new so I would think they should be sitting right... I might come up a couple of flats and see... Cooperman over at the mini forum seems to think a number 6 will work well?!?

how many flats are you on bud?

I dont set by flats. I set the jet down from the bridge in mm with a vernia caliper. By turning the nuts you move the jet. Aam needle is a floating 6 needle. If larry set it up it should be right. He gave me my needle recomendations which was pretty spot on.

They will no longer to set correctly if you adjusted the nuts

I found #6 needles worked well in my 1293 with ported head, twin HS4s and Tighe 104 cam, with Corolla 1.46 rockers.

Pretty sure the jets have been adjusted after I got them so I wouldn't know for sure what they were. Are you able to let me know what your measuring and I'll see how far off I am. but I may call Larry to ask.

You need to take the carb bells off needles out. Look down into carb. You will see the jet. Measure the depth it sits down from the bridge of the carb (the flat base on the bottom of carb)

just to try to help... it seems you may have your float levels to low to start with
if your mixture adjyustment has to go down that far to get it "close-ish" then i would suspect you will need to lift the float-levels first, before choosing another pair of needles

& then i would (personally) start with a pair of CP4 or MME needles with Red springs... just as a starting point, as you have cam & head mods etc

then with the float levels correct & those needls & springs youi should get closer to a decent "starting point"

hope that helps :-)

Yes my cooper S has 286 cam 1.5 rockers and HS4s A stupidly ported head and was very hard to get the off idle correct.I too have the mixture screws well down and recessed the needles in the piston to compensate.I needed like an AH2 to get off idle better and like an MME mid and top.CP4 MME BG all went super rich just above idle That is the critical zone that is hard to get quite right.I am now running BF needles that went lean coming off idle so I modded them with wet and dry and micrometer. Was very frustrating and I feel your pain

I had CP4 then #6. I got rid of the rich spot off idle by leaving the dampers out after GR's AF meter showed the problem.
But in winter I put them back in with ATF.

I believe a lot of my problems was a talented head porter that wanted to impress me with large ports 1100S inlets instead of 1.401.We put the bigger inlets in as my mate worked at a machine shop and the difference was amazing.!The 1.5 rockers made a big improvement but the inlet ports are just stupid. Vizard doesnt agree with port enlargement much as it is not the bottleneck and neither does GR. I wonder is this why it was so hard with carb needles for me.
