i'm in the design stage of a bike engined mini.

I've got the bike engine downstairs, funnily enough, in my old bike :) It's a bandit 1200, it's not a bad lil engine, lots can be done to them to spark em up, so it's a decent base to work from. and it's torquey ;)

Quick questions tho:

It'll be rear wheel drive, and I had originally intended to kinda run chain drive directly to the rear wheels, HOWEVER, dad's shot me down repeatedly going "Oh, without a diff, you'll schred tires!" and I'm not rich enough to knowingly destroy tires, just because i couldn't design in a diff.


So, questions.

Anyone seen a bike engined mini before?

Anyone know of a small (physically) diff? something with a decentish 1 to 1 ratio? (bikes got a 5 speed box)

Anyone got anything i didin't think of? it's a racecar at the moment, not caring to much about getting it road legal. :P that'd be the next step.

I don't have quite 4600pounds. :P

Plus, I've already designed the exact same chain driven rear end, and I've got a mate who could machine up the centre peice for next to nothing for me, but my design doesn't have a diff....

gargh.

Stupid tyres. :P

Your tyres wont be too bad, plenty of people drive heavier cars with a mini spool which does the same thing. Getting it passed an engineer to be deemed road legal might be difficult though. Im not sure if they would accept it. As a race car the chain would be fine.

The diff and axles would be pretty expensive to get done.

So what happens about reverse?

For a car to be road legal it needs to be able to go in reverse ... i don't know much about bikes... but bikes cant go backwards can they?

Most i've seen rig up something so that they have all forward gears in reverse :shock: insane...

Those bike engined race cars here (what are they called?) have a starter motor driving teeth on the LH rear disc, to get a `reverse'... 8)

quite agricultural but it works....so long as the battery is healthy if the engine has stopped going around....

I would get in contact with your local Uni and ask if anyone in engineering is involved with the SAE program...they use chain drive, I think to a differential....

how are you going to drive two indepentant wheels? You would need uni's or c'vs and this is expensive. If your mate is a machinist he could whip up a special housing to retain all the bevel gears.

Current ideas have changed to:

Motorcycle engine and sprocket down to another larger sprocket, which drives a shaft connected to a conventional car diff, which drives the wheels.

Yeah, I know CV's might get a bit expensive, but hey, they're pretty much a requirement :)

yer saw those aussie racing cars at the clipsal. Apparently all the ones there were meant to have a metal 'seal' sorta thing so the engine can not be tampered with so they are all the same.

funny thing though that when we looked at the winning cars engine there was no metal seal on the engine :?
