I sent an email about gti motors and pictures of some subframes....
then I asked if he had any suggestions.....
he wrote.....

How radical do you want?
Consider using the Suzuki front end complete with steering. You wont
have to
get axles made
Cut the body off at the firewall
Build a new front frame for the struts
Hang the engine from the frame
Dont use rubber mounts
Solid mount the engine using engine plates
Make a one piece tilt front either from the steel bits or a glass
replica
Forget the 12" wheels
Use 13"
Fit 205/40R13 tyres these are 494 diameter. The original Mini 145R10
was 490
diameter. The GTi may have had 165/70R12 which was 537 diameter
These need 7" rims
This will only be possible if the GTi had 6"
Dont worry about the track
It will be standard GTI + 1"
Just flare the guards to suit
What rear suspension did the GTi have?
If it had the tube axle use that. It comes with GTi brakes and track
Scrap the Mini subframe
Use trailing arms and coilovers
Radius the guards out and flare the guards to suit the track
If it did not have the tube axle, find one out of an earlier Suzuki, or
make
a tube axle and graft the GTi brakes on
Find some front doors with sliding windows
Sikaflex 3mm Lexan in place of all glass except the screen
Make a glass boot
Scrap the rear seat
Trim off all the steel you dont need, like the door pockets, the bit
the
rear seat sits on, the rear seat pockets and the rear bulkhead
Scrap the tank
Make a new tank and fit it to the floor behind the passengers seat
Fit an exhaust tube cage to the rear of the cab
Fit harness belts
Fit one piece racing seats
You will have to have a demister, two speed wipers and washers

I think this would be legal with a 1964 model


..... er um... no. I really just want a gti motor in my mini!!!
note: He did say that I needed a demister and two speed wipers.. any body else have this requirement placed on their vehicle?
oh and I do know where you can get glass boots if anyone is interested.

demister is pretty standard don't know about the wipers but I dare say they are too.

Yeah, I have heard that before about the wipers. Don't know why it is a requirement.

Not sure about the demister though??? Can you ask him why they are requirements.

In the UK they make 12 volt fan heaters, no hot water jsut add power and out blows the hot air, you would need 2 as they are not very big and the last time I looked they were about $50 each, they are made for kit cars

They stock them here in Oz, "the 12 volt shop" I think it was called? In South Oz somewhere.

All the longitudinal load on the front is transmitted through the front
corner of the subframe
It needs to be rigid
You cant afford to support the trailing arm by a couple of bits of bent
tube
It needs to be at least equivalent to what was removed
It would be better if the tubes were straight
But then you need to brace it sideways
I still think it would be easier to rigid mount the engine and hang it
off

If you didnt have disc brakes already then you didnt have 1275ml
In 1964 850ml is all it would be
1300/850=1.53
besides even if you had a 1275ml engine the power was 74hp from memory
The GTi has 115hp
115/74=1.55
So not only will you need a demister but also a collapsible steering
column,
seatbelts,two speed wipers, washers and a mirror on the door

See attached extract from the Code of Practice clause 3.1.2.4
Emission control rule see clause 3.1.3.1.2
You will need a catalitic converter and unleaded fuel assuming that the
engine is standard from the air cleaner to the cat including the
computer

12" rims are OK
Wheels were 3.5x10
Replacements are limited to 4.5 wide
And the track will be limited to 1279 front and 1190 rear

You will need the odometer recalibrated and checked to be within 4%

I need to see how you intend to fit the disc brakes
It must be sound engineering
What about rear brakes?
At the end of the day the brakes need to be the equivalent of the GTi
Diameter, thickness and ventillation
These factors govern the heat dissipation capacity
You will get some lattitude because your vehicle is lighter. The GTi
was
880kg

.......... do any mini's come out with a colapsable steering column?
And I just bought a set of Minilites 12 X 5!! darnnit... Will need to 'keep thinking'

or use another engineer..

The collapsiable steering columns aren't that hard to get hold of from later model minis,
but the brakes could be a bugger. What did the Suzies have?

Don't joke, I will do this if I can't get away without a demister!
This is done quite commonly on electric car conversions.
There is no way the clubby style heater will fit back into the moke now,
not with that transmission tunnel in the way :?

ALL Minis have a collapsible steering column. :lol:
With the bus-like angle it is mounted at, if you hit it, the whole thing bends forwards into the windscreen.
Trust me it works- I've been there, back in `65. The tree head-on won, but the column bent forward like a banana. :D

Minis were advertised with this `feature' back in the early 60's.
