Post subject:  midmounting and engineering (and legality)

i'm really bad at managing my cash and i just got a full time job, so it's going to be full steam ahead on the mini in the upcoming months

is it even possible to get a mini engineered with a midmounted motor?
there's 3 really obvious parts to my plan which will need engineering:
honda brakes in the front
deseaming (they're ****ing rusty, unlike the rest of the car, oddly enough)
and midmounting a engine that's double the original 1098 (or bigger)

has anyone got any thoughtful input or experience with any of those?
i'm obviously the most concerned about midmounting the motor.
i don't know of anyone having done it before, nor do i know of anyone in australia with a z-cars kit going ahead...
FWD is, well, bland.
if it ends up being too hard i'll probably flog off the mini and buy a riceburner, and i'd much rather have a stupid-fast clubman, frankly.

cheers!

I honestly don't think you will be able to register it as the same car. Meaning I think it will need to be an ICV. Which would mean it would need to comply with current ADR's.

But fark me, when I was thinking about it I went to a JAP wrecker and found a new MR2 turbo. THAT, would be awesome.

seems to me as though the mini is a very, very long way off ADRs.

yeah. i had that motor (3sgte) or a prelude H22A in mind... unless i could score a K24A (accord euro) motor cheap...

guess i'll have to go talk to an engineer.
could just make it a track car i spose.

Reason why I was considering the Yota Mota was that it is already a rear mounted motor. All you gear linkages and clutch stuff would be sorted. You would only have to slightly modify it to fit a mini.

I have some pics of a mini with a rear mounted vtec if you woulld like to see them. It's a mini you can order out of the states. $20k US for the base model I believe.

Yeah, I read that some time ago.
Still think a front mount is more sensible, so long as you have AWD

If you really want power to the rears, go awd as awdmoke said..

I think you have the wrong car though with a comment like 'FWD [is] Bland' :?

i highly doubt theres enough room in a clubman for a motor + awd gearbox... and there'd be floorpan alterations and a complete redoing of the rear subframe.
and i'd probably lose the boot that way too.
it might work for a moke but i don't know about awd with a mini.

i think it would actually be easier to midmount a motor than it would be to do awd.

and hey, maybe i do have the wrong car thinking fwd is bland... but i still rather like it. i can just see room for improvement.
and i don't see anyone paying out z-cars conversions either.

The Z Cars Kit (Hyabusa, R1 etc) is for all purposes mid mounted........ sits directly behind the front seats.
