so I did a compression test and cylinders 1 and 2 are 180psi and 3 and 4 are on 90 psi. could this be an indication that the head gasket has gone?

that's great news!!

head gasket can make a loud knock-knock noise - I refer to it as "sounding like a tractor" - I'd definitely pull the head off and if the gasket is blown I'd replace it and see. $45 and a couple of hours v's pulling everything apart is worth it

1275's usually only go between 2 & 3, but can go between 3 & 4 too...

Agree head gasket can make a knocking sound but you usually get no compression on the cylinder where the gasket has blown
Just had a similar problem on my brother's van. Fingers crossed its just the gasket.

Took off head last night. Was relieved to find a big gap in the head gasket between 3 and 4. Thanks for the comments guys, always good to share.

Might be a good idea to check how flat your block and the head faces are

I gently rub the top of the block with an oilstone, all over, around and around, big sweeps and figure eights, till it's all clean and shiny - takes all of the high spots off

So was the blown head gasket a copper or a composition one?
Copper gaskets haven't been the same since they got rid of asbestos....!
Most engine builders I know use a Payen BK450 composition gasket now on 1275s.

Looks like the motoradusa has to open as normal and then if the engine overheats, it opens further still and then locks there.
If it fails before opening, how is it going to open further :?

Yep copper gasket. Pulled a couple of lifters out by accident so will replace the tappet jacket gaskets while I'm there, as well as the fan and aircon belts and the thermostat , all associated gaskets ect ect. Its never as simple as it should be.

ah... 998cc - ignore the talk about BK450 gaskets, and blowing between 1&2 or 3&4 is the norm...

Not sure what is the killer gasket for 998s and 1098s now. ACL were it, held up well for turbos too but sadly they closed the gasket factory.
ACL bearings came back, but nothing else.
Built a 68mm bore one a year ago, but I used a 1275 gasket due to bore size. Had to move or plug a few block and head water holes to suit.
