I know there has been plenty of oil debates, but i am asking again.. and some other stuff

Just got myself a Rover 1000cc auto that the misses is going to use as a daily, first off any issues specific to the auto i should watch out for? She only does about 3,000k's a year..

Secondly what is going to be the best plan of attack for maintenance and oils? Every 6mths? What do people go for oil wise on the autos?

Plus any other things you guys recommend?

Change oil and filter every 2500km (1500 miles) if you want the auto to last.
As for the oil- don't use synthetics, or any oil that is friction modified, in an automatic.

Castrol Australia recommends GTX 15W/40 or GTX 20W/50 for Minimatics, and Morris 1100/1300 automatics.
Rover Mini doesn't exist in their database.

Ive got a 1989 rover and before i changed engines i used 20W-50 in the 998.

yep been running one of these for awhile now.

keep the oil nice and they work well.

just use a basic 20w50 designed for older engines.

I am using valvoline xld classic in mine at the moment, and its shifting well. But i stocked up on a few different brands when they went on special.

you're probably looking at changing the oil once a year if you're only doing 3000kms in 12 months.

i recorded mine averaging 7.85L per 100kms over two tanks, but that was when i had to do mostly highway and hills which are both flat out most of the time

Note to all with a few cars, or are changing oil frequently go and buy a 60litre drum of oil looking at 80 - 100 dollars for good castrol stuff, i get mine from my local mechanic or Ultra tune

If it is seeing short runs, change the oil frequently, ie every 4 to 6 weeks, rather than going off any amount of KMs. It will rapidly build up acids in the oil, that will wreck the gearbox.

If it sees longer runs where the oil gets up to temp for 20 mins +, then change it at intervals NOT exceeding 6 months.

The additives in mineral oils have a shelf life, so while it seems it won't be doing many KMs, change the oil on a time basis rather than KM based.

The factory also advise this and I'm sure for the same reasons.

Definitely use an SG rated 20W/50 or 20W/60 oil.

I used to use GTX2 but it's no longer available in it's original form. Before that I used Corse Plus which was the best but is also discontinued.

I tried Penrite HPR30 at the last oil change and it seems to have made the changes sloppy. I'll be trying Valvoline Classic this weekend.

The irony being I work for BP (who owns Castrol) but the only oil they offer that is suitable is Castrol Edge and it is ridiculously expensive. Even with staff discount applied.

Yeah the Edge has had yet another name change, now is Edge Platinum- so Castrol can charge platinum prices..
@$44 a can for 25W/50 they have lost me, sorry!!

Where did you see it for $44?? Most places near me have it around the $80 mark for 5 litres!!

Think I'm only paying 30-35 for edge for 5 litres.
It's the only stuff I've used in my minis for the last 5 years.

Where can I get it for that price Harley?

Last time I checked the cheapest I could get it was $55 at staff discount. But it wasn't unusual for Ricebarn to have GTX cheaper than staff discount.

If I could get Edge for around $40, I'd use it.

Now i know there was a huge thread covering it but it turned to bickering pretty quick so the useful info was lost.
But what about KMX oil? is it still good to use? As far as i could work out they have changed the oil they used recently?
