When I was a cash poor apprentice, I had a piece of fence wire between the SU fuel pump and the muffler. When the SU would stop, the engine would cough and splutter, the muffler would shake and that would restart the pump.

Very ingenious :D

It was passed down to me in the 90s by a very elder gent, these pumps do have a long history of disappointing drivers.

Are you referring to a planned 'malfunction' that created the opportunity for something more stimulating with an unsuspecting passenger?

I read this with great interest, as up here in the U.S.A., many are now saying that the more recent production of the Facet fuel pumps are not lasting at all. This is a real shame, as the older way of thinking was that they'd last forever. I can't help wonder if the new ones are just Chinese Replacement Auto Parts (C.R.A.P.) that have become so prevalent these days.
Best of luck with yours,
MSH

Would it be hard to find the fuel pump bracket if I convert mine back to an SU pump?

What SU pump do I need to buy that fits all these brackets hopefully one which is more modern and does not have the points?

As Timmy201 says, AUF214EN is the SU genuine electronic pump.
Points-type (AUF214) seem to be No Longer Available.

Regarding your concerns about these pumps' reliability, I have 3 minis, each for more than 40 years, all with genuine SU pumps (all using contact points). Never had to replace a pump or repair one - other than the inlet/outlet spouts where the plastic becomes brittle and cracks.

Thanks for pointing that out Tim. Couldn't find mention of the points version so assumed they'd become NLA. As I said in my post, all 3 of mine are still going strong -likely to outlast me!
