When Ss weren't worth much I used to buy the ID plates of wrecked cars. I held onto them for a while and then sold them on.

I'm waiting for the other IDs to show up. :)

Why doesn't someone put the plate on the correct shell and voila! A genuine Cooper S for a change...

Im curious as to why and what you expected the purchaser to do with the ID plates if you sold wrecked car (write off) plates. Not to put on the wall of the man cave, if you know where the body is why isn't the plate still with it's to late to cry about it. Just Saying

If everyone did that there would only be 5000 MK1's on the road not 10000.

Swapping to another mini is easy, put it in a hq, make it challenging

If I go very quiet there's a very good chance I broke something.

When I was in Indonesia everyone used to refer to my car as a "Mini Cooper". After a while I got sick of explaining the difference between a "Cooper" and DeLuxe etc and gave up. Then when I was in Bali, I came across a couple of Jap imports (80's cars?) with 1000cc engines with aircon haha! Hate to think what their 0-60 time would be other than effing slow slow. BUT, both cars had Mini Cooper logo's on the rear quarter panels that seemed to be factory original. Mr Cooper must have given the go ahead to put his name on anything resembling a Mini at some stage? Then I sort of understood why the locals called any Mini a Cooper (only saw about 4, including one "classic 1966 Morris Mini" for sale. Beautiful condition, customised with full leather interior etc, $20,000 and it was yours. But it had internal door hinges among other things haha! I kept my mouth shut..). So for the rest of my trip, my car was a Cooper, now it's back in Melbourne it's reverted to a souped up DeLuxe :-)

I'm getting all nostalgic now! Here is a photo I found a few days ago of a car I spotted in Bangkok in early 1987 would you believe (yes, I was already a Mini tragic then...!).
Note the unusual nudge bars and the rear wiper. Wonder were it is now?! I suspect it was genuine..

True, in the 80s JC discovered a very lucrative sideline in selling "Cooper" kits into Japan... He understood the Japanese market well.. So much so that the wooden boxes the conversion kits were shipped in became quite sought after ..usually made into something like a cocktail cabinet. Of course the kits contained badges (stickers) you applied to show off what you had.

It didn't take long for Rover to wake up to the opportunity and you soon had the "Limited Edition" and then "Mainstream" Coopers... Initially these were only available in Japan....

Cheers, Ian

Hi 1071 S,

Thanks for that, explains things a bit..

Did you like the Thai Cooper?!

What would it be worth now in that condition? Still don't get the nudge bars...

I have other old Mini photo's if people are interested. Or should I create a new thread?

Cheers

Michael
